I Still Hate Snape

At the end of Deathly Hallows, Snape obviously becomes quite a controversial character with his revelation of how he helped/protected Harry throughout the series. Some people love him for what he did for Harry, but I hate him. I absolutely hate him. Yeah, what he did in the end was awesome, but he was a complete asshole to Harry his entire life. This was all because he looked like James, who Snape hated for bullying him, and because Snape was immensely jealous of him for marrying Lily.  I understand Snape was being a double agent for the Order of the Phoenix and he couldn’t be “best friends” with Harry, but he could have at least shown him a little respect while at school instead of bullying Harry and giving him detentions every chance he could.  Just because Snape lost Lily as a partner and friend does not give him the right to treat Harry like complete crap. Snape’s feelings clearly were hurt but he needed to grow up and get over it. Harry had nothing to do with what happened so there’s no reason to take it all out on him.

I also really don’t like how Harry named one of his sons after Snape. Snape treats him horribly for his whole life, then does one good thing and he is completely forgiven? Maybe Harry had awhile to reflect back on everything and he forgave Snape but I think that is a little extreme for him to name his CHILD after him (Albus Severus Potter). Snape helped to make sure nobody killed Harry, but was not nice to him at all as a person. Don’t get me wrong, I think Snape was extremely brave and courageous for doing what he did, but I just think he could have gone about it in a much better way.

  1. While I don't completely agree with you, I like how you've expressed your opinion. I ended up feeling like Snape had, indeed, redeemed himself. Also, I felt like after several years of contemplation it might be possible for Harry to appreciate the sacrifices that Snape made for him and might realize that Snape was also a deeply psychologically damaged man who, while using methods that were often petty and vindictive, still did something remarkable ultimately. However, I understand why you do not feel the same way.
