Dumbledore the Puppet Master

When I finished reading the final book in the Harry Potter series it was 3 in the afternoon and I hadn't slept in over 24 hours due to an inability to put the book down for more than five minutes. I missed more than a few things on this first read. It wasn't until the second read before the movies came out that I really appreciated all the things that Rowling did in wrapping up the series. Reading the book for the third time with this class gave me a new appreciation for what Rowling did with Snape and Dumbledore's respective plot lines and how she made seemingly insignificant details become these vital things in this book.

When I was first reading the series, I think I was the only person who actually hated Dumbledore. I didn't like how he kept Harry in the dark about things that could kill him and I didn't like the way he manipulated those around him into doing exactly what he wanted. It was a little off putting to say the least. When all of Dumbledore's plans for Harry came into light with this book, I felt justified in my views on Dumbledore. A reread of the series as a whole made me more aware of certain Chekov's guns that Rowling interwove even in the much earlier books. I also grudgingly came to accept him a little. He was willing to die for his plans to come into being! As much as I may not like the way he kept Harry dancing on puppet strings for seven books, ultimately he did what needed to be done and I have to like him a little bit for that.
